Fuel prices up in Nigeria on eve of Democracy Day.

Lagos, Nigeria (PANA) - On the eve of the fifth anniversary of the return to democratic rule in Nigeria, citizens got a rude shock Friday with a hike in the price of gasoline from at least 42.70 to 49.80 naira.

For the second time in a month, petrol dealers who have been clamouring for higher fuel prices to cushion what they said were higher operational costs and the effects of rising crude oil prices surreptitiously adjusted their pumps to reflect the new prices.

Last week, they raised the price by at least 1 Naira, from 41.70 naira to a minimum of 42.70 naira per litre.
