Following Shell's bombshell announcement on 9 January that it was recategorising a significant chunk of its proven reserves, the company is now facing litigation from a number of quarters. No one's a happy loser these days, and if you drop a clanger big enough to warrant waving goodbye to your chairman and one of your most senior executives, you can guarantee a US class action lawsuit will follow as night follows day.

Compounding the group's litigation problems is a US Securities and Exchange Commission investigation.
