A few months ago, the landlocked West African state of Chad, ravaged by civil war and
corruption, shipped its first oil exports through a 1,075 kilometer pipeline running southwest
under the dense rainforest of neighboring Cameroon to the offshore Kribi loading terminal in
the Gulf of Guinea. This marked a new beginning for Chad, turning one of the poorest
countries on earth into AfricaOs newest petrostate.
