The May 5, 2006 peace agreement on Darfur signed in Abuja, Nigeria, between part of the largest of the insurgencies and the representatives of the Government of Sudan was welcomed by many as a step toward real peace in the troubled area of western Sudan, the size of France. However, it is much too early for peaceworkers to give up close attention to the violence and destruction in the area. In fact, some consider the peace agreement as a smoke screen behind which violence, destruction, displacement of people and rape of women will continue as before.
In a May 19, 2006 statement to the UN Security Council, Jan Egeland, Under-Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, highlighted the continuing massive displacement, constant violence and attacks against civilians and the few humanitarian organizations struggling to provide relief to more and more displaced people.
