ThereOs good news for women who prefer pumping iron to running on the treadmill: Strength training can be as good a way to burn calories as moderate cardiovascular workouts. Researchers at the University of Memphis in Tennessee had people do one of two workouts on alternating days: either 30 minutes of moderate-intensity bicycling or 30 minutes of squats. Even though cycling burned more calories overall, the squats were still an adequate choice for people trying to shed pounds. To get the benefits, study author Richard J. Bloomer suggests doing exercises

that use large muscle areas, such as lunges, rowing, overhead presses,

and squats, at least four times per week.

Dogs do more than just shed on the couchNthey urge their owners off of it, too. Reporting in a recent issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, researchers who studied more than 300 people found that those with dogs clocked nearly double the amount of time doing mild to moderate exercise each week than non[ETH]dog owners.
