Los ANGELES--Women with small breast tumors may be able to avoid the trauma of axilary node dissection by undergoing sentinel lymph node biopsy that combines blue dye and scintigraphy.
That finding emerged from a large, prospective study presented by Dr. Tom Miller at a press briefing at the annual meeting of the Society of Nuclear Medicine. To his knowledge, he said, this multi-center study of 814 patients is the first to compare sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy and axillary node dissection in the same patients. The study is also noteworthy for the large number of patients involved, said Dr. Miller, chair of the society's scientific program committee.
"This study demonstrates that a very limited operation on the axilla may be adequate for some patients," Dr. Miller said in an interview
Only women with tumors less than 3 cm in diameter and who have not already undergone surgery are candidates for this procedure, cautioned the study authors, led by Dr. H. Schirrmeister of the University ...
