WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) -- The recording industry has filed 493 new lawsuits against alleged file swappers in its ongoing effort to stamp out illegal online downloading.

The Recording Industry of America, which represents the five largest recording companies, said it filed the suits Monday. The trade group added it does not yet know the identities of its litigation targets.
