ENDEARING is not the first word that springs to mind to describe the French writer Benjamin Constant (1767-1830)--better known for Adolphe, his novel of anguished passion among the Enlightened, than for his classics of political liberalism. But in his preface to his superb translation--clear, accurate and graceful--of Principles of Politics Applicable to All Governments, Dennis O'Keeffe refers to Constant's "extraordinarily powerful and endearing mind".
