ROSE ARCE, A PRODUCER AT CNN, LEFT HER WEST VILLAGE APARTMENT AROUND 8:45 A.M. ON SEPTEMBER 11, 2001, and headed for coffee at a local deli, as she did every other workday. She knew something was wrong by the expressions of the people around her, and when she heard that an airplane had crashed into the World Trade Center, Arce was on her feet running toward Ground Zero.
One of her first thoughts was that this could be no accident. Also, having covered the World Trade Center bombing in 1993, she knew she had to get as close as she could and interview people coming out of the building to find out what had happened. But what she saw when she arrived was beyond devastating. Arce was one of the fist journalists to report from the scene as the second plane made impact.
Using her cell phone, she called CNN headquarters immediately. When all cellular phones in New York City went dead, she ran into an apartment building and banged on doors until someone finally opened up. She explained she was from CNN and needed to use their phone, so they let her stay. All day and night Rose witnessed and spoke of the indescribable scene.
