As you work with bankrupt accounts, you may come across a umber of terms that may be unfamiliar to you. Below is a list of some of the more important terms that you will need to know to properly manage customers that have filed for bankruptcy protection.
ADVERSARY PROCEEDINGS. A lawsuit arising in or related to a bankruptcy case, commenced by filing a complaint with the Court.
AUTOMATIC STAY. An injunction issued automatically when a petition for bankruptcy protection is filed. The automatic stay is an injunction that halts all lawsuits, foreclosures, garnishments, and all collection activity against the debtor as soon as a bankruptcy petition is filed.
BANKRUPTCY CODE. The federal bankruptcy law, contained in Title 11 of the United States Code.
BANKRUPTCY COURT. A Federal Court specializing in handling bankruptcy cases.
BAR DATE. The date by which claims from pro-petition creditors should be filed with the Bankruptcy Court.
CHAPTER 7. The Chapter of the Bankruptcy Code that deals with the liquidation of a debtor's assets.
