Universities weren't designed for mothers. Long work weeks are easier with no children or a wife to take care of them. At the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) annual conference in Denver in March 2004, five student affairs professionals told how they've learned to balance motherhood, career and self. They were:
* Dr. Lori Reesor, assistant dean of student services in the School of Education, University of Missouri-Kansas City
* Tajhma Cobbs, graduate assistant, University of Arkansas--Fayetteville
* Jody Donovan, assistant to the VP at Colorado State University
* Anne Flaherty, assistant dean of students and registrar at the University of Kansas Medical Center
* Dr. Peg Blake, VP for student affairs at Boise State University
Schools need policies that recognize and value families. Meanwhile, women with children need balance now. It's important to tell and hear each other's stories.
