Greek scientist Archimedes said, "Give me a place to stand and a lever and I can move the world." As a man, Archimedes had no problems finding a place to stand.

Women have not been that lucky. We've been told our place is in the home, but a man generally owns it. In academe, we bump against glass and stained glass ceilings.

Where are our spaces? How can we change the world if we haven't a place to stand to leverage our power?

Dr. Jennifer Hockenbery in the department of philosophy at Mount Mary College (WI), believes that a liberal arts education helps to give women a movable foundation. She spoke at the Women's Leadership Symposium 2004 at Mount Mary College WI in March.

A place to be influential

As recently as the turn of the last century, women did not have a voice outside of the home. We could not vote or own homes, nor have our names on the mortgage.

Things are different today. We're administrators, businesswomen, politicians. We own our homes. We can throw off the suits of armor that protect us in battle. Or can we?
