Solitude puts Scots ace in mood to make big impact
TROUBLED Scot Colin Montgomerie was a hands-down winner of the longdrive competition before a ball was struck at the Deutsche Bank SAP Open.
Monty lives just a stone's throw from Heathrow but he travelled by road to St Leon-Rot forthe Tour Players Championship of Europe, a title currently held by Padraig Harrington.
Though Harrington has done some serious globe-trotting himself this year, coming toGermany via Macau and Shanghai, the Dubliner left most of the driving to the airlines.
Montgomerie jumped behind the wheel of his Lexus on Tuesday, making the short hop to Dover ferry port in 90 minutes, while he completed the 400-mile trip from Calais to Heidelberg in around seven hours.
"I enjoy the freedom of driving and it's nice to spend some time on your own," he explained. Given the recent turmoil in Monty's private life, one can understand why.
