When we tested the Kia Sorento SUV a year ago, we found it had a roomy interior, good off-road capabilities, and a long list of features for its price. But it suffered from clumsy handling, poor gas mileage, and an awfully stiff ride. The sport-utility earned an overall rating of good, but a poor rating for ride comfort.
After publication, Kin Motors America informed us that it had softened the Sorento's suspension to improve the ride. To verify that claim, we bought a 2004 Sorento LX, which cost $24,035. The ride has improved, but it remains stiff. Impacts are less harsh but still pronounced, and jostling motions are constant. The ride is no longer bone-shaking, but we rate it only fair.
