The fundamental way clothes dryers work--tumbling laundry in a heated chamber--hasn't changed much in decades, although some models have gotten more stylish and high-tech. Among developments worth noting:
* Maytag recently introduced a $1,200 drying center combining a dryer with a heated cabinet designed to speed drying of clothes you'd normally air-dry reduce wrinkling, and remove odors (see CloseUp, below). It lived up to most claims in our tests.
