Until recently, the only tool for aligning bookshelf supports, cabinets and counters, and appliances was the spirit level. It tells you when something is exactly horizontal or vertical. Now, a number of tools add a laser's light to cast a long, level line.
To find out how they fare, we tested the Black & Decker BDL 100S Bullseye and the Strait-Line 64300 laser levels, along with a 4-foot-long spirit level. The laser levels sell for $65 to $70. Spirit levels cost $9 to $40.
