The Black & Decker Lids Off, a new electric jar opener, can be especially useful for people who lack hand strength or grip, our tests showed.
Lids Off does all the turning. In our tests, it easily opened containers ranging from tiny baby-food jars to hefty spaghetti-sauce jars--any jar up to 4 inches in diameter and 8 inches tall. You place a jar in the device, lower its upper housing, and press and hold a button. Clamps grasp the jar lid and loosen it.
Lids Off, which sells for about $40, isn't a must-have for everyone. It takes up counter space, has a rather noisy motor, and won't work in a power outage. It sometimes faltered when trying to reopen a jar that had been in the fridge.
