Wenman Joseph Bassett-Lowke made a fortune manufacturing model ships and railways in Northampton, England. In 1916 his father bought an early nineteenth-century terraced house at 78 Derngate, which he gave to his son on his marriage in 1917. To refurbish it the couple hired the Scottish architect and designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

Although Mackintosh never visited the site during the project, he made significant changes to the house. An extension was built at the rear, which enlarged the kitchen and dining room and provided an enclosed balcony for the principal bedroom and an open one for the guestroom.
