BETRAYAL at court led to chaos in Kedah in the 19th century, writes TUNKU ISMAIL JEWA.

ALOR Star, capital of Kedah, was officially proclaimed a city by the present Sultan of Kedah, Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah, in a glittering ceremony on Dec 21, 2003.

The city was founded by Sultan Muhammad Jiwa (1710-1778) in 1735, when he moved his administrative centre from Kota Bukit Pinang to Kota Star. The State capital was renamed Alor Star in the reign of Sultan Abdul Hamid Halim Shah (1882-1943).

But there was a time in the city's long history in which it was abandoned and neglected. From 1821 to 1841, Kedah …
