(International Medical Innovations Inc.) An in-office lab test that measures cholesterol content in the skin for use as part of risk assessment in adults with severe coronary artery disease, in conjunction with serum cholesterol rests. The first noninvasive cholesterol test to be approved.
* Recommended Usage: A small pad is placed on the palm of the hand, two drops of a reagent solution are applied, and after 3 minutes, a handheld reader measures the amount of blue color in the pad and displays the results on a computer screen.
* Special Considerations: Not intended as a screening tool or substitute for serum cholesterol testing; not shown to be useful for patients with less severe CAD. Can't be used by people with skin diseases on their hands or recently applied skin lotions or topical agents. Most research subjects were white and aged 40-82 years; results may vary with age and race, according to the Food and Drug Administration.
