SAN FRANCISCO -- Bone quality appears to be significantly diminished in premenopausal women with type 1 diabetes, Dr. Elsa Strotmeyer reported in a poster presentation at the annual scientific sessions of the American Diabetes Association.
The results may indicate a greater need for prevention of postmenopausal bone loss in women who have type 1 diabetes, said Dr. Strotmeyer of the University of Pittsburgh.
Heel quantitative ultrasound scans were conducted in 74 premenopausal women aged 35-55 years with type 1 diabetes and in 229 controls, according to Dr. Strotmeyer.
The women are participating in the 5-year prospective ProHealth study, designed to validate earlier preliminary data suggesting that menopause occurs at a significantly younger age in women with type 1 diabetes.
