An international telecommunications conference has hailed MTN Uganda's villagePhone for pioneering telecommunication in rural Africa.
An official from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Michael Minges said during the African Telecoms 2004 Conference in Cairo, Egypt that many villages in Uganda can now receive cellphone signals.
The MTN villagePhone, which was launched in Uganda in November, is a replication of the Grameen Village Phone Programme in Bangladesh. MTN established the villagePhone in partnership with Uganda's leading microfinance institutions.
