Vital stats: Entering the week, he had a career ERA of 4.20 in 112 games with an average of 6.05 strikeouts per nine innings. This season, his WHIP is 1.25 and his strikeouts average is down to 3.94.
Throws: His best pitch has been a straight changeup topping out at 81 mph. Because of reduced dive, the quality of the pitch is diminished from last year. His second-best pitch is a cut fastball topping out at 85 mph. His four-seamer has good downhill angle and hits 85. He lacks the velocity to throw effective high strikes. Last year, he used a heavy, 84- to 86-mph sinker to both sides of the plate; he has not used it as much in 2004. Redman's curveball mostly is for show.
Tendencies: Redman is a finesse pitcher who does not walk many batters and does a good job of staying out of hitters counts. He is, however, around the strike zone almost too much, much like Odalis Perez and Wilson Alvarez were in 2003. Redman has been hittable (opponents ...
