When is the publication of a book not just the publication of a book? Not much of a riddle, that, because the answer, just now, is obvious: when the author of the book is Bob Woodward. That singular circumstance turns the publication into a phenomenon. The book itself becomes an epiphenomenon. The book itself becomes a MacGuffin around which swirls a thickening plot of revelation, embarrassment, and recrimination. The book itself becomes something like one of those newspaper extras in an old black-and-white Hollywood movie, a Daily Globe or an Evening Dispatch that comes spinning out at the viewer to signal some astounding turn of events.
