The UFU has told DARD that it does not believe the current methods for determining compensation payable to herdkeepers/flockowners, for loss of animals/birds removed through the various disease control schemes, requires any major changes.

The UFU was responding to Governments consultation on proposals to rationalise compensation for Notifiable Animal Disease Control.

The Union does agree with DARD that inconsistencies exist, where compensation is determined by the disease an animal has contracted rather than the actual value of the animal. (Eg 75% value for Brucellosis reactors; arbitrary limits for BSE cases).

The Union supports the alignment of diseases under the one compensation arrangement, but strongly disputes the concerns raised about the case by case …
