The most savvy picks on Day 2 of the draft:

1. Luke McCown, QB, Louisiana Tech (fourth round, 106th overall, Browns). McCown is the quarterback who coaches were trying to keep secret. A number of teams played their cards wrong and were frustrated when he was gone; that was evident in the long gap (42 picks) between the selection of McCown and the next quarterback, Craig Krenzel.

2. Alex Stepanovich, C, Ohio State (fourth round, 100th overall, Cardinals). Rated by many coaches as a second-round pick, Stepanovich had an outstanding Senior Bowl and also can play guard. Look for him to start in 2004.
