While driving his truck in the early evening April 13, Jacksonville University relief pitcher Ashley Roque, 21, saw a silver Acura swerve to miss a car that was pulling onto the highway near St. Augustine, Fla. The Acura, driven by Laura Beth Thompson, 25, of St. Augustine, flew off the road and into a grove of pine trees. Roque did the only thing he could think to do: rush to help. Thompson survived the crash and is in stable condition, and the police credit Roque with likely saving her life. A story of heroism, in Roque's own words:
I pulled over, dialed 911 on my cell phone and ran to the car. What I remember most is the intense heat of the flames as they shot out of the cracks in the hood. As I was looking at the car, I realized the 911 dispatcher had already picked up and was trying to get my attention: "Sir, sir, you need to speak to us!" I hadn't even heard the dispatcher's voice.
