MIAMI BEACH -- Consider fish oil when dysmenorrhea in adolescents fails to respond to first-line therapies, Dr. Zeev Harel recommended at the annual meeting of the North American Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology.
"Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories and then oral contraceptives are the first choice for treating dysmenorrhea, but about 30% of patients will not respond to these medications," said Dr. Harel of Brown University in Providence, R.I.
In a previously published study, he found that dietary supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids (fish oil) helped relieve dysmenorrhea symptoms in adolescents.
