NEW YORK -- Parathyroid hormone may reduce the incidence of nonvertebral fractures.
In a placebo-controlled study of 1,600 postmenopausal women, those who had injections of parathyroid hormone (PTH) for 18 months had fewer nonvertebral fractures at approximately 12 months than those who didn't take the PTH injections, Dr. Nancy Lane reported at a rheumatology meeting sponsored by New York University.
The relative risk of nonvertebral fractures was 0.46 for women taking either 20 or 40 [micro]g of parathyroid hormone daily The study group averaged 70 years old and was 20 years post menopause.
"But it's not clear at this time that PTH is any different from bisphosphonates in reducing fracture risk because they haven't been compared at the hip," said Dr. Lane of the University of California, San Francisco. PTH is not yet approved by the Food and Drug ...
