Women who weighed less than 2,500 g at birth were more than four times as likely to develop gestational diabetes mellitus than women who were born at a normal weight, reported Kim E. limes, Ph.D., of the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, and her colleagues.
After adjustment for factors besides gestational age, such as body mass index and maternal diabetes, the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) was 4.2 times greater for low-birth-weight women.
The relationship between birth weight and GDM risk followed a U-shaped curve with and without adjustment for gestational age, indicating that women born with a high birth weight (greater than 4,000 g) may also be at increased risk for GDM. Adjustments for risk factors such as body mass index and maternal diabetes eliminated the relationship between high birth weight and risk for GDM.
