Cinco de Mayo symbolizes Mexico's fight to maintain independence in the 1860s. The holiday on Wednesday commemorates the Battle of Puebla with the French army, in which a small group of Mexicans defeated the larger and seemingly more powerful French troops, in 1862.

Yet the holiday's meaning in America has broadened: The parades, fiestas and dancing celebrate Mexican heritage -- whether one is Mexican or Mexican-American.
