SEOUL, May 3 Asia Pulse - South Korea's technology giants Samsung Electronics (KSE:05930) and Samsung SDI (KSE:06400) are expanding their shipments of cell-phone components to Nokia and Motorola, the world's No. 1 and No. 2 handset makers, industry sources said today.
Samsung SDI, the world's second-largest maker of plasma-display panels, recently began supplying its rechargeable batteries used in mobile phones to Nokia, according to the sources. The shipments came after successful product durability testing.
Within this year, Samsung SDI, which also makes flat-screen displays and mobile-phone screens, may ship its rechargeable batteries to Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications, the world's fifth largest handset maker, making it the battery supplier to the top five mobile phone makers in the world, according to the sources.
Starting early this year, Samsung Electronics Co. also started supplying so-called NAND-type flash memory to Nokia.
