SEOUL, May 3 Asia Pulse - South Korea's exports in April jumped 38 per cent year-on-year to a record US$21.7 billion, extending the country's trade surplus for the 13th month in a row, new government figures show.
The record exports generated a $2.9-billion trade surplus, the country's biggest since December 1998, according to figures released by the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy.
The data showed that imports also rose 27.6 per cent annually to $18.8 billion.
"Right now it's a fad at exporting firms to say that if you don't make money now, you are a fool," Kim Sun-cheol, chief of the ministry's export department, said.
He attributed the high exports to increased shipments of semiconductors (62 per cent), auto parts (30.2 per cent), wireless handsets (48.1 per cent) and computers (51.1 per cent), which were mostly destined to the country's traditional trade partners - China, the United States and the ...
