PRAGUE, May 1 (CTK) - The Czech Republic joined the EU at midnight sharp and now it makes part of a community of 25 countries, which embraces almost half a billion people.
The EU accession was approved by Czechs in a referendum last year. Along with Czechs, the EU was joined by Slovaks, Poles, Hungarians, Slovenians, Latvians, Lithuanians, Estonians, Maltese and Greek Cypriots.
The accession of the eight former post-communist countries in particular is considered a symbolical ending of the division of Europe after World War Two.
The advocates of the enlarged EU speak about a historic moment, while its opponents warn of the loss of national identity, soaring inflation and negative social impact.
While the Czech government, headed by Premier Vladimir Spidla (Social Democrats, CSSD), is among the clear advocates of the EU, President Vaclav Klaus, elected by the votes of the opposition Civic Democratic Party (ODS), has made it clear that he is sceptical of the current form of the EU.
