A computer will help you search for the best Medicare prescription drug discount card, but you'll still need a sharp pencil and a calculator.
Even though a new feature added to Medicare's Web site, www.medicare.gov, seems easy enough to navigate for comparison of prices offered by various card programs, it's only a starting point.
You have to do the math and make some hard choices.
Do you want a card that covers all of your drugs, or just some of them if it means a substantial savings? Are you willing to go to several participating pharmacies, or just one? What's the cheapest plan, once you factor in the annual charges of the individual cards?
The federal government's Web site has met with a barrage of criticism since it was launched Thursday afternoon.
