"TAKE off your shirts!" the diva wailed from the stage.
But apart from the yummy go-go boys and the super energized flagger who danced bare-chested in true circuit boy fashion, hardly anyone flashed flesh during last Saturday's Flesh Circuit Party at Greenbelt's Expo Exchange. Some chunky troll in a tattered straw cowboy hat dared to take his top off. I laughed my lungs out when people started screaming, "Put it back on!" But the rest of the guys who were too cowardly to let their hair down and flaunt a tongue-in-cheek attitude disappointed me.
"Circuit party" was a misnomer for the one-night event. Circuit parties, born in the States, are usually a succession of gay-themed, sometimes exclusively gay, parties that last several nights and days. Still, "Flesh" was a giant leap forward for gay men in Manila. We can finally, "Ok, we're ready for events of this magnitude. It's time we partied like our other gay brothers elsewhere in Asia, the United States, and Europe." To me, this alone made the party a resounding triumph and a thumbs-up to gay Pinoy pride. Plus, almost 2000 gay men trooped to the venue to witness all the drama on the dance floor that night. Who could have known there was that many party-hungry fags in these parts?
It was the first of its kind in the Philippine capital, thanks to Kokun Productions whose team includes Henry Lim, Raj Autention, Josh Dieron, and Ramon Balsamo. Congratulations to you, boys!
