AFTER setting the screen on fire with unusually acclaimed or popular projects, and sometimes even winning awards in the process, stars have to think hard and long before deciding on what to do for an encore.
They're nervous because a hit sets a high standard that's difficult to match or surpass. And, if they come up with a flop, it could cancel out some of the cachet they've gained.
Oscar derby
Take some of the winners in last year's Oscar derby. Charlize Theron won an award for her gutsy performance in "Monster."
After the euphoria of that signal achievement had ebbed, Theron decided that her best encore would be a film in which she would play a miner involved in a sexual harassment suit.
