"School of Rock"
D: Richard Linklater
S: Jack Black, Joan Cusack
AFTER his band fires him, a failed rock musician (the outstanding Jack Black) fakes his way into a job as a fifth grade substitute teacher out of desperation to make his rent. Slowly, he turns his prep school class into a rock band-without the knowledge of the school administration, of course!
Nope, Richard Linklater's ("Before Sunrise") fun-filled movie doesn't have the lofty ideals of "Mr. Holland's Opus," "Dangerous Minds," "Music of the Heart" or "Mona Lisa Smile," but his film succeeds where those movies fail: With an unlikely hero and his good-natured principal muse (the consistently charming Cusack), "Rock" comes off as a delightfully unpredictable winner devoid of the melodramatic we-can-change-the-world mush common among films with similar themes.
