MELISSA Martel, wife of wealthy mall scion Robert Martel, yesterday sought temporary and permanent protection order against her husband from the Makati Regional Trial Court, the first of its kind filed in the country since the Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act of 2004 came into effect last March.
"This is going to be a test case because it is the first of its kind filed in the country," Lourdes Cruz-Matters, lawyer of Melissa, said.
Lawyer Howard Calleja also said that the case is "trailblazing in favor of battered women."
Calleja said Rowena Guanzon, who was one of the lawyers who assisted in drafting the Act, is among Melissa's legal counsel.
