IN A LAST ditch bid to unify the opposition, rival presidential candidates Fernando Poe Jr. and Sen. Panfilo Lacson agreed Thursday night to let the Iglesia ni Cristo decide who between them should challenge the candidacy of President Macapagal-Arroyo in this year's elections.
Poe and Lacson agreed on the formula to ensure the support of the Iglesia ni Cristo for the opposition and further boost their chances of winning the elections.
Surveys had shown that the opposition would have a greater chance of beating Ms Macapagal at the polls if they are united. But the SWS said that between Poe and Lacson, the actor would have a better chance under a united opposition.
The INC, which can command a bloc vote of at least 2 million, is also being wooed by the camp of Ms Macapagal.
An opposition source said that Poe and Lacson met at the residence of San Juan Mayor JV Ejercito, a son of deposed President Joseph Estrada. It was their second meeting in three days.
