Hong Kong is set to benefit from the entry of 10 countries into the European Union (EU) as the average import tariffs to those countries will be cut to 4 per cent from 9 per cent, the Trade Development Council (TDC) said.
Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia will join the EU tomorrow, raising the number of member countries to 25 from 10 and boosting the combined population to 455 million from 391 million. Total gross domestic product will rise to US$9.1 trillion (HK$70.98 trillion) from US$8.7 trillion.
