PHILADELPHIA -- Modafinil may be a useful adjunctive treatment for depressed patients who have residual symptoms such as fatigue and daytime sleepiness after partial response to antidepressant therapy, Dr. Karl J. Doghramji said at the annual meeting of the American Psychiatric Association.
Patients showed rapid and significant improvements in these symptoms, in a placebo-controlled trial of the wakefulness-promoting agent, said Dr. Doghramji, professor of psychiatry and director of the sleep disorders center at Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia.
