Most UK employees are voluntarily working more than 48 hours a week, as opposed to being forced to by their employer, according to a survey by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.

The research of more than 750 workers found little evidence of employer abuse of the opt-out clause, which allows employees to work over the EU limit of 48 hours per week.

The majority of respondents (70%) stated that it was partly, or totally, their choice to work in excess of 48 hours. However, 30% said there was an 'element' of compulsion in their decision.
