Byline: TARTAN TALK BY WALTER PORTER

THE two largest open solo competitions held annually in Ulster are the Ulster Festival of Piping and Drumming (the Ulster Championships) and the Cullybackey Pipe Band's annual solos held this year for the 17th time.

This week, I concentrate on the prize winners at both, with comments on the events next week.

The festival was held, as usual, at Monkstown Community School and attracted 187 pipers and drummers. Overall, a great competition, with the complete results being:

Novice piobaireachd: 1, D McCarthy (Kildare); 2, S Maher (Dublin); 3, J Simpson (West Lothian).

Open piobaireachd: 1, A Carlisle (Ballygowan); 2, Alen Tully (Leixlip, Kildare); 3, S Macleod (Athenry). …
