Part-time instructors at community colleges in the state of Washington will share $11 million in settlement of a lawsuit for depriving them of health care benefits over the summer months since 1999.
The February 2004 settlement means adjuncts who worked at least half-time since 1999 will share in the funds, if the settlement is confirmed by the state legislature and the court. Two part-time instructors at a community college had filed the class-action lawsuit in 1999.
At issue was whether the adjuncts worked quarter-to-quarter, as the state claimed, so were "temporary employees" and ineligible for coverage.
