Women who cannot find full-time tenure-track positions in their field often become adjuncts as a way to get their feet in the doors. Today higher education is becoming increasingly reliant on instruction by adjuncts, the majority of whom are women.
According to Leslie and Gappa in The Invisible Faculty: Improving the Status of Part-Timers in Higher Education (Jossey-Bass, 1993), the percentage of undergraduate courses taught by full-time faculty has decreased dramatically since 1970. It fell from 78% in 1970-1971 to 68% in 1982-83 and 59% in 1993. In community colleges, adjuncts were 65% of faculty, according to Leslie (1998).
