Under a new policy for Title IX, the federal law requiring gender equity in public education, public schools would be free to teach girls and boys separately in more than just physical education classes.
The Department of Education, which enforces Title IX, said loosening the requirements would mean K-12 public schools could offer separate classes, grade levels or entire schools for one gender, provided there is a coed version available. Vocational classes would not be affected.
