Hormone replacement therapies using estrogen alone or in combination with sequential progestin supplementation may put women at significantly increased risk of epithelial ovarian cancer, reported Dr. Tomas Riman of Falu Hospital, Falun, Sweden, and his associates.
Despite these findings, the investigators did not recommend that clinicians change current HRT prescribing practices. Any decision regarding HRT use must address the therapy's impact on coronary artery disease, osteoporosis, venous thrombosis, and other health effects, the researchers said (J. Natl. Cancer Inst. 94[71:497-504, 2002).
The study included 655 women between 50 and 74 years old with newly diagnosed epithelial ovarian cancer and a control group of 3,899 women.
