VAIL, COLO. -- Fertility-sparing surgery is emerging as an attractive option in selected patients with cervical cancer, Dr. Susan A. Davidson said at a conference on obstetrics and gynecology sponsored by the University of Colorado.
Radical trachelectomy involves removal of just the cervix, leaving the uterus in place. Cure rates appear to be similar to those of traditional radical hysterectomy according to Dr. Davidson, chief of the division of gynecologic oncology at the university.
Candidates must have small lesions--less than 2 cm--and negative margins on cone biopsy.
