LOS ANGELES - Conservative surgery for borderline ovarian tumors resulted in 100% survival without any recurrences and preserved fertility in some cases in a retrospective study of 25 patients.
Borderline ovarian tumors account for 10%-15% of ovarian cancers, and they lack frank stromal invasion and behave in a relatively indolent fashion. The standard of care for these tumors has been hysterectomy with bilateral adnexectomy, but because borderline tumors more commonly affect women of reproductive age, some physicians recommend conservative surgery to preserve fertility.
The study participants were 10 women with stage IA ovarian cancer, 3 with stage IC disease, 1 with stage IIIA disease and 11 with unstaged disease.
